I keep forgetting stuff, so this is a good place to write it down.
Starter formula
From this page:
500ml LME + 3500 ml water = 4000ml @ 1.042 sg
This page says that a 2 litre starter is about right for a 5 gallon batch, which'd make my formula:
250ml LME + 1750 ml water = 2000ml @ 1.042 sg
...which'd make 0.25 c for 1 pint/500 ml, right? Except that it's not: it's more like 0.25c for 1.5 pint/750 ml to get the gravity to 1.040.
Metric
- 1.5 quart water/lb of grain mash ratio == approx. 3 litres water/kg grain
- 158 F = 70 C
- 150 F = 65.5 C
Volumes
55 lb / 25 kg of grain should fit in two 5 gallon buckets. 3 l == 4 lb grain.
