Spring Has Sprung IPA

Aiming at a not-too-sweet IPA, hoppy, lower-gravity; the last IPA I made was too sweet for my taste.

Recipe

Batch size: 5 gallons

Grain bill:

  • 6 lb pale malt
  • 3/4 lb Cara 8
  • 1/4 Crystal 120
  • 1 lb Jaggery

Hops:

  • 75 g Cascade @ 60
  • 50 g Cascade @ 20
  • 50 g Cascade @ 5
  • 30 g Citra dry-hop
  • 30 g Amarillo dry-hop

Yeast: Safale US-05 and S-33

Prep

March 29, 2013: Mashed in overnight. I hit 69 C -- considerably higher than I was aiming for; I wasn't taking too much care. Oh, well...

Brew Day

March 30, 2013: Down to 58 C overnight. Gravity was 1.035 coming out of the mash tun. FG was 1.050 -- perfect! I lost my siphon starter, so I had to start the siphoning by hand. Hydro sample was most bitter.

Fermenting

This thing took off fast. Two packets of yeast will do that, I guess. Dry-hopped with the kids April 6, 2013.
