The Great Unix Software Upgrade Flowchart
09 Jul 2006Note that the snide comment about NetBSD is just a joke...couldn't come up with anything else to say. Everything else, of course, is the gospel truth.
Last day at my old job was Friday, and as a going-away present I got not only a lovely universal gift certificate from my co-workers, but this t-shirt from the sysadmin I hired a little while back:
Arlo and Clara are doing well:
I have been peed on twice now, which I'm told is fairly good for the first week of a new parent.

After "try Gentoo" and before "upgrade libc", you need to insert "install Gentoo", "compile everything", "emerge --sync", "compile everything", "change USE flags", "compile everything", "hate yourself", "compile everything", and finally "compile everything again". Optionally putting those into an endless loop of self-hatred and compilation, with occasional wistful glances over at FreeBSD.

Yep. But, Fermat-like, the margin of my whiteboard was too small to contain all that. That said, ever tried upgrading Gnome versions in FreeBSD? Ass through straws is what it sucks.

I've actually been running TKYP (Theo Kills Your Pony) for about six months now, (glad to see someone finally started using this in something other than virtual environments) and I must say that while it is little, it *is* exceptionally loud.
Really best-suited for Bogarthian swamp tunings of the upper registers (I mean, we ARE talking *female* yaks here, after all), but is re/pro/quomotely manageable under just about any available p-woo/gbic setup you may find yourself in.
Just don't forget to fee the spooie before you try to get anything out of it.
...and now, the joke I'm told you haven't heard yet: "Cute kid: sure it's yours?"

Y'know, I've always wanted to make my own distro. But I wanted it to be something that would not only be suboptimal but actually dangerously hostile to run: random deletion of files, 87 back doors, DOS attacks against US Army computers, that sort of thing. I thought it would be Linux, but now I know it will be a fork of OpenBSD, and it will be called TKYP. But good god, don't ask me to support female yaks and GBIC...there's a limit, man.

I've been using this pic as my wall paper since you did the post. I have now made it into a flow chart, thank you.

Gekitsuu -- that's amazing. Thanks for the link! What did you use to make the flowchart?

Eeeek. You have published a page from the Technomicron. Those conjuration symbols open a gate to summon the demon of beancounting. Now the world is no longer safe. Fortunately, you have been gifted with a +5 mystical blouse. Proof against the forces of capitalist magic.

Upgrade chart makes complete sense.
As for upgrading Gnome in FreeBSD, the gnome team releases a script that is there to help you with it, never failed for me. Use some portupgrade fu to make it all come together in a really beautiful way.
Congrats on being a father, I wish you good luck, I know I was a pain while growing up :P

bang-on.caMy co-worker got it made at Bang-On, a custom t-shirt chain. There's a location not too far from where I worked.
